A dear friend came over last night, and together we prepared for an upcoming bestie’s bridal shower.
Of course we were pouring over the piles of craft supplies, scouring Pinterest and reviewing our mental checklists to be sure that every detail would be accounted for. We are list-lovers, princesses of productivity, planners to a fault.
But we also talked about our friendship, our families, our hopes and dreams for the future. We shared advice, we reminisced, we giggled. There was nothing particularly special about last night, and yet I was reminded – this is it. These are the moments, each perhaps inconsequential on its own, that bond people to create lasting, fulfilling relationships.
So a heartful reminder to all of you brides-to-be, bridesmaids, cousins, best friends, aunts, moms, grandmas and everyone else: don’t lose the heart of wedding planning. I’ve been there too, and it is all too easy to be focused on The Wedding and lose the heart of the day, and all the days, weeks, months, and years prior.
Take the time to enjoy each other’s company without fussing about if the glasses are full or the ice is melting. Giggle as you accidentally glue the ribbon to the table instead of the paper. Listen to the wedding stories of the women in your family. The planning, the parties, it is all to celebrate your commitment to your partner but its also a chance to connect. Maybe you see them each day, or maybe its been years. This is the heart. This is why we gather and worry and plan. To be connected.
Keep the heart.
