Welcome back for Wedding Wednesday on Mon Amye! In the coming weeks I’ll break down specific elements leading up to, and on, our wedding day. But to help set the stage, my husband suggested that I start by sharing The Concept that guided our plans.
I say concept specifically because I was against a theme for our wedding. I’m 100% for theme parties, and themed weddings can be appropriate and help convey a certain look or mood. We just didn’t feel like “The Hot Pink Wedding” or “The Casino Nights Wedding” was for us.
And that’s really what it came down to: we wanted our wedding day to represent us.
So we thought about the type of party we’d want to attend, and our day-to-day life, and came up with our concept: Casual Elegance.
Those words, Casual Elegance, are going to mean different things to different people.
Elegance, as defined by us, conveyed a bit of luxury, some formality and fanciness, and an overall classic, traditional feel. Something that is elegant is timeless. Refined. Graceful.
And to balance that out, we knew we needed to keep Casual at the forefront of our planning. For us, Casual meant approachable, comfortable, familial. We wanted to throw a party where everyone felt cared for, so they could relax and have a great time. Nothing too fussy. Just fun. We really valued everyone who made the effort to attend, so we tried to help them feel comfortable and relaxed.
Casual Elegance played into every. single. one. of our decisions. We (tried to) explain it to every vendor. We tried to capture it with every element. It is difficult to say what exactly came together to make Casual Elegance happen [which is why it wasn’t a theme, but a concept. With a theme, you can point at the hot pink invites and dresses and flowers.] But by the end of the night we felt like we had achieved our goal.
In retrospect, maybe we erred on the side of elegant more than casual – this wasn’t exactly a backyard BBQ. But hey, if you can’t be fancy with the big white dress on your wedding day, when can you? And I left at the end of the night with absolutely none of my belongings and bare feet. I’d say that’s pretty casual!
