Three years ago, on June 24, I said “yes” to my sweet husband’s marriage proposal. Here’s our story:
Once upon a time, a boy and a girl were in grad school together and they fell in love. After graduation they moved in together, started new jobs, and life was happy.
About a year later, on a warm summer Friday in June, the girl went to work as usual. She thought the boy did too, but then he called her at lunchtime.
“Can I come by your office?” he said.
Sure, she said. A little unusual, but she didn’t think too much about it.
Then he showed up with these:
Ooooh, what a nice surprise! He can be so romantic, she thought. It had been a long, tiring week and the flowers were a sweet gesture. Then, realizing it was Friday and the flowers would die alone in the office for the weekend, she asked the boy:
“Thank you, but how will I get these home?”
“I’ll pick you up after work” he said. That would be nice, she thought, avoid walking home in the heat.
So Friday afternoon dragged along as Friday afternoons have a habit of doing until it was time to go. The boy showed up on-time, and the girl hopped in the car with her roses.
“Lets go out to dinner,” he said.
“Nah, I’m tired,” she said, “Let’s just go home.”
“But I wanted to take you out for a nice dinner,” he said,” maybe at the Kennedy Center restaurant.” [alert alert! this should have been a sign as it was the location of their first “real” date, but the girl remained as naive as usual and didn’t pick up on anything. Instead she said…] “No, I’d really rather go home. We can do that another night.”
Little did she know that this beauty was hiding in his pocket the whole time…
Reluctantly the boy drove home and, as the story goes, stashed the engagement ring back into its hiding spot.
After a little while, seeing how much the boy wanted to go out that Friday night, the girl decided to compromise with a low-key activity.
“Let’s go see a movie in Georgetown” she said. “We can walk over, its a nice night.”
“Ok,” said the boy, “that sounds good.” And off they went….
Our engagement story continues next week for Wedding Wednesday, so be sure to come back! For now, I’ll let you in on a secret: it has a happy ending!
