Two weeks ago we reviewed the Oscar 2014 Red Carpet for bridal gown inspiration. By now the Oscars are kind of old news, but I didn’t want to miss the opportunity for inspiration for Mother-of-the-Bride (MOB) gowns as well.
In my experience, and it seems many others, finding a suitable MOB dress is, hmmm, how shall we say this, a bit of a challenge. AKA a potential source of months of stress and anxiety. At some point I’ll share some of my experience with my mom, and some things we learned along the way. But for now, lets just revisit the Red Carpet for some less-bridal, more Mother of the Bride styles.
First up, Robin Roberts in a lovely lilac style. Nice neckline and beautiful detailing with the metallic embroidery. Even the color would be appropriate for most Mothers of the Bride and most venues. This is special enough for Mom, but doesn’t totally steal the show from the Bride.
Something slightly different but equally beautiful was Bette Midler’s square neckline and column shape. The detailing here is also intricate and a little bolder because of the color. The cap sleeves make this dress appropriate and one that many mom’s will gravitate toward.
Is mom wanting a bit more of the style spotlight? Take a cue from Goldie Hawn’s show stopping metallic gown. The flattering drape, and the beaded sleeves, draw all of the attention up. The sleeves are light and unrestrictive, but enough sparkle to keep the jewelry minimal.
Is mom a bit more reserved and classic? Then she may want to emulate Meryl Streep’s black and white attire. A beautiful off-the-shoulder drape shows just enough skin to keep it from feeling stuffy. The belted waist adds definition and a bit of sparkle. Yes, the top is white, but this is clearly not a wedding dress so there’s no chance of upstaging the bride.
And once again I’ve saved my favorite style for last: Julia Roberts. I almost posted this for bridal fashion, but thought it would also suit Mothers of the Bride. The deep V is classic and feminine, and made even more gorgeous (and appropriate) by the lace inset. The peplum detail keeps this on-trend, and helps hide any problem areas. Beautifully tailored and lovely in black, this would make for a very stylish and confident Mother of the Bride.
