I took a chance when meeting up with an old-to-me, new-to-DC friend. Teddy and the Bully Bar would be new to us both.
We actually nearly missed the place. The modern exterior of an office building just didn’t seem to live up to the name above the door.
Once inside we were welcomed by a warm mix of modern/industrial and classic decor. The hostess greeted us with a friendly smile as we beelined for open seats at the bar. It seems this spot hasn’t met its happy-hour-stride since we were there promptly at 6pm and easily found open seats. But shhh, don’t ruin the secret!
The happy hour menu + drink menu was extensive and creative…but I’m not sure it made a difference that we were there during Happy Hour since the prices were still steep, at $9 a cocktail, and $8-10 for a glass of wine. (I guess I should take up drinking beer?)
To celebrate the first hint of Fall I tried the “Obama’s Honey Cider,” a refreshingly light mix of whiskey, lemon, honey, lavender and cider. t was the perfect transition from summer to fall beverage season. (don’t pretend you don’t match your drinks to the weather. I know you do.) My lovely companion opted for wine, and when I joined her for the second round. Our bartender had a helpful suggestion to follow the cocktail.
The service overall was pleasant, no rush with the menu or drinks as we chatted. And it was easy to catch someone’s eye, though I wonder if, when the bar crowds grow, that will change.
We accompanied our drinks with a roasted tomato flatbread. Perfect snack size to share, and not too messy to eat in public. The seasoning was surprisingly sweet but we devoured the whole thing.
I will definitely keep this one on the shortlist (That is, until the crowds discover this spot)
as a great place to impress a date or splurge on yourself. From start to end, I didn’t get as much of the “Teddy” Presidential flavor as I hoped for but I have a feeling this will be a consistent, creative menu.
Overall rating: B+ and worth another visit
