While I love to get out of town and see new sights, I also live in an area with lots to offer! In the Discover DC series, I share some of the local gems where we “play tourist” and the places that have become favorites.
Last year we visited Butler’s Orchard for a lovely afternoon with friends. If you’re not familiar, Butler’s has been family-owned for over 60 years with over 300 acres, a fresh market and u-pick options (depending on the season). They’re located in Germantown, Maryland, but seem to be quite a popular destination for DC residents despite the 30+ minute drive from downtown.
I was especially glad to find this u-pick destination since I had tried a number of farms in the DC area that didn’t actually have the option. It was so disappointing to drive to those farms only to find that all the work was already done! I like the process of going through the fields and choosing my basket of berries or apples, and was thrilled to find that Butlers had plenty to offer.
When we were there last year, I made a mental note to share this local gem with mes amis in the summertime. While I really enjoyed being there in mid-September, a lot of their apple crop was already picked-over and the berries were just finishing their season. We still came home with some delicious fruit, but I imagine going in late August will yield larger crops! Our friends were able to return recently and reported a basked full of tomatoes as well as blackberries and raspberries.
Bon Voyage and happy picking!
